Thought it might be good to post on what has been on my reading list of late:-
A couple of weeks back I spent sunday reading through John Bevere’s Driven by Eternity. A few people I know have read or are reading it with mixed reactions and so I was wanting to know what the guy actually was saying. Some good, some interesting, some that I disagree with – I can see why it is raising questions.
Recently read N.T. Wright’s Scripture and the authority of God. Good read, he makes a lot of sense in tackling areas that I think many Christians don’t think too much about but actually hold certain views on. Ie, how God speaks while reading devotionally, the relationship between Old and New Testaments, literal readings.
Read a classic: Bonhoeffer Life Together. Wow. He makes many strong statements about “doing life together”. This is quite confrontational toward the way we envisage Christian/church life currently. I’ll have to spend a bit of time figuring out how to integrate this into life.
Currently working my way through Richard Foster The celebration of discipline which has been really challenging so far.
Also reading Pink The attributes of God. Short but deep reflections upon dimensions of God’s character.
On the Bible front: Deuteronomy was so much more lively this time around. Jeremiah has been this flipping between “c’mon peoples… can’t you see that …” and a soaring vision of what will be while alongside a twisting challenge as to what one understands Gods plans and promises to be.
I switched translations to NRSV and am reading John at present – seeing a whole lot of literary themes in it this time…
